No man is an island is the project title of a case study on The Kellerske institute which was a mental health institution in Denmark.
The institution had a department on Livø, which is a Danish island located in the north of Jutland.
Between 1911 and 1961, approximately 700 men were housed on Livø in The Kellerske institution, the Establishment for Inappropriate Men.
the institution's silver lining of practice was to separate the healthy individuals from the deviant to educate them. This division was based on the evaluation of the men's mental state and sexual behaviour, everything deviating from the heterosexual norm was considered inappropriate and means such as castration was used to prevent the residents from reproducing - if re-entering the mainland.
